Old Northwood was developed from 1920 to 1927, at the height of the city's real estate boom. It became the city's first local historic district in 1991 and joined the National Register in 1994. Houses from that boom are now about a hundred years old.
The Flamingo Park district, bounded by Park Place, Parker Avenue, Belvedere Road and Florida Avenue, holds 458 historic buildings in the Mission and Spanish Revival style. It was listed on the National Register on July 14, 2000. Old stucco walls and tile roofs like these need steady care.
Grandview Heights was built from about 1910 to 1925, home to ministers, shopkeepers and the craftsmen who built the Palm Beach hotels. It has 268 historic buildings, many of them Bungalow, Craftsman and Colonial Revival houses, and was listed in 1999. Howard Park and the 1939 Armory sit at its western end.
The Lake Worth Lagoon runs about 21 miles and separates the city from Palm Beach. Bulkheads now line 81 percent of its shoreline, and mangroves are down to 283 acres. On the city's waterfront, the seawall is often as important as the house.
Out west, the Grassy Waters wetland serves as the reservoir for the city's drinking water and as a nature preserve. The city sits about 16 feet above sea level and was incorporated in 1894. Its 1920s land boom was already fading when the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane devastated the city.
