Port St. Lucie up close

How Port St. Lucie grew.

River Park and the start.

In 1958 the General Development Corporation bought the River Park development and 40,000 acres along the St. Lucie River. By February 1961 there were 250 homes, and the city incorporated on April 27, 1961. The oldest houses in town date to those first years.

From 330 people to 204,851.

Port St. Lucie had 330 people in 1970, 55,866 in 1990 and 204,851 in 2020. It covers about 120 square miles and is the largest city in St. Lucie County. Homes here come from every decade of that growth, and each era has its own common repairs.

The Mets at Clover Park.

Clover Park opened on March 5, 1988, as the spring training home of the New York Mets, and holds 7,160 people. It was renovated for the 2020 season and is also home to the St. Lucie Mets. Spring training brings crowds to town every year.

Frances in 2004.

Hurricane Frances came ashore at the south end of Hutchinson Island on September 5, 2004, with winds near 105 mph. Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties took the worst of it, with more than $1 billion in damage in each. Any house built here before 2004 went through it.

The Savannas.

Savannas Preserve State Park protects southeast Florida's largest freshwater marsh, over 7,000 acres. It has nearly 13 miles of trails from Jensen Beach Boulevard to Easy Street, with the main entrance on SE Walton Road. Homes that back onto it sit next to wet, low ground.

What Port St. Lucie houses need

A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for St. Lucie County:

Quarter-acre lots on septic

A big share of Port St. Lucie was platted in the GDC era and a lot of those houses still run on septic. Pump-outs and drain fields are part of the calendar.

Tradition and the new builds

One of the fastest-growing cities in the state. New stucco, new irrigation, new HOAs, and the builder punch list nobody finished.

The rivers

The St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon keep the air wet and the low lots wetter. Drainage, mildew on the shady side and salt near the water.
