Boca Raton up close
Addison Mizner announced plans for a grand resort city here in 1925, but his company went bankrupt in 1927. A few small houses he built survive in what is now the Old Floresta Historic District. They date from the city's very first boom.
The Boca Raton Army Air Field opened in 1942 on land partly taken from the Japanese farmers of the Yamato Colony, and it trained B-29 bomber crews. Much of that land later went to Palm Beach County and became the grounds of Florida Atlantic University.
Boca Raton had 992 people in 1950, 6,961 in 1960 and 49,505 by 1980. Most of the city went up in those few fast decades. The 2020 census counted 48,728 housing units, and a house built in the 1970s is now about fifty years old.
Lake Boca Raton is one of three wide spots along the old Boca Ratones Lagoon, with the inlet at its southeast end. The federal government improved the Intracoastal Waterway here between 1930 and 1935. The city sits about 13 feet above sea level, and waterfront homes deal with salt and docks.
Mizner Park was finished in 1991 on the site of the old Boca Raton Mall. Nearby, Mizner's 1926 Cloister Inn became the Boca Raton Resort and Club, and his first buildings stand on El Camino Real. Downtown mixes 1920s landmarks with much newer blocks.
A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Palm Beach County:
West Boca is community after community with exterior standards. Roof cleaning, pressure washing, paint and landscaping on the HOA's schedule, not yours.
Half the houses go quiet from May to November in the worst humidity of the year. AC, the drain line, the water heater and the pool need checking while you're gone.
A lot of 70s through 90s Boca has barrel tile on the pitched parts and flat roofs on the rest. Both need inspection after every storm and replacement on a schedule.
