Abacoa was conceived in 1993 and construction began in 1997, as a New Urbanism plan with a walkable town center. About 4,000 of its homes were built by 2009, with 6,073 planned in total. It also has 393 acres of open space, including a 260 acre greenway.
Roger Dean Stadium was built in Abacoa in 1998 and holds 6,871 people. It is the spring training home of the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. Spring games bring crowds and traffic to the neighborhoods around it every year.
Jupiter Inlet Colony sits at the south tip of Jupiter Island on the north bank of the inlet. It incorporated in 1959, covers 0.2 square miles and had 405 people in 2020. Perry Como lived on Lighthouse Drive there for 29 years.
Jupiter had 313 people in 1950, 3,136 in 1970 and 24,986 by 1990. The 2020 census counted 61,047 people and 30,679 housing units. Most of the town was built after 1970, in waves, and each wave is now aging on its own clock.
Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 sandblasted the paint off the upper part of the Jupiter Inlet lighthouse, the brick tower completed in 1860 and painted red in 1910. If a storm can strip paint off brick, it can do the same to roofs, screens and siding.
