The Florida East Coast Railway opened Homestead's first station in July 1904. The city incorporated on February 8, 1913, making it the second oldest city in Miami-Dade after Miami. It sits about 26 miles southwest of Miami at an elevation of about 3 feet.
The Homestead Historic Downtown District was added to the National Register on November 19, 2007. It is bounded by NW 4th Street, South Railroad Avenue, SE 1st Road, and North Krome Drive. Its Seminole Theatre was built in 1921 and rebuilt in 1940 in Streamline Moderne style.
The Seminole Theatre on Krome Avenue shut down in 1979, and in 1992 a storm blew off its roof and gutted the inside. More than $5 million was raised to restore it, partly through a voter approved property tax increase. It reopened in December 2015.
Homestead opened as an Air Transport Command ferry airfield in November 1942, northeast of the city. Much of Homestead Air Force Base was destroyed in 1992 and then rebuilt. On April 1, 1994, it moved to Air Force Reserve control as Homestead Air Reserve Station.
Biscayne National Park was established on June 28, 1980, and Homestead is its nearest city. About 95 percent of its 172,971 acres is water. The only direct mainland access is the Convoy Point Visitor Center, next to park headquarters.
