Hialeah up close

Hialeah, from the high prairie.

The high prairie.

Hialeah's name came from Seminole Willie Willie and means pretty prairie or high prairie. Cattleman James Bright and aviator Glenn Curtiss started selling land in 1921 and sold $1 million worth within 10 days. In September 1926 a hurricane destroyed much of the young city.

Hialeah Park.

Hialeah Park opened for Thoroughbred racing on January 25, 1925, and covers 40 square blocks on the east side of the city. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 1979. Its flamingo flock made it an official American Flamingo sanctuary.

Seminola, 1924.

Seminola was designated in 1924 as Hialeah's historically Black neighborhood, on land provided by James Bright under segregation laws. Its early families built their own homes, cleared brush, and paved roads. Descendants are still working to place a historical marker at the Marshall home on Marshall Way.

When the canals rise.

After Tropical Storm Eta on November 9, 2020, water stood on Hialeah streets including West 80th Street and 28th Street. Residents reported canals overflowing into the road, with water taking about two days to go down. Standing water that long tests driveways, slabs, and door sills.

Amelia Earhart Park.

Amelia Earhart Park, just north of Hialeah, was created in 1980 on 515 acres. The land was the southern part of the old Naval Air Station Miami. It has lakes, 8 miles of bike trails, a farm village, and a 5 acre dog park.

What Hialeah houses need

A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Miami-Dade County:

Dense block houses from the 50s to the 70s

Single-story concrete block, flat roofs, cast iron drains and additions on additions. Sturdy in a storm and overdue on plumbing, electrical and roofing.

Owner-landlords

Hialeah runs on duplexes and small rentals owned by people who live around the corner. A property manager account handles every unit from one screen.

AC all year

No off season. Drain lines clog, coils foul and units die in August when every HVAC company in Dade is booked. Filters and a drain line flush on a schedule keep you out of that line.
