Fort Myers up close
The Fort Myers Downtown Commercial District covers 82 acres between Bay Street, Lee Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Monroe Street. It holds 69 historic buildings, including the 1914 First National Bank Building, and was listed on the National Register in 1990. Buildings that old need upkeep that matches their age.
Dean Park is a residential district in Fort Myers that was built in the early 1920s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 2013. A house that old has been rewired, replumbed and reroofed more than once, or it is overdue.
The Paul Laurence Dunbar School opened at 1857 High Street in 1927 to serve the African American community of Fort Myers, replacing Williams Academy. It joined the National Register in 1992, and a new Dunbar High was built about a mile away in 1963. Many houses around it have stood for generations.
Gateway sits just north of Southwest Florida International Airport and covers 6.14 square miles, about half a square mile of it water. It had 10,376 people in 2020, up from 8,401 in 2010. Growth like that means a lot of the houses here are still young.
The Caloosahatchee runs about 67 miles and links to Lake Okeechobee as part of the Okeechobee Waterway. It widens as it passes Fort Myers and reaches the Gulf about 10 miles southwest of the city. Homes along it live with salt air, high water and docks that need tending.
A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Lee County:
Ian rewrote Lee County in 2022. Roofs, drywall, electrical and pool cages went in under pressure. Repairs done fast need a second look now. Flashing, drainage and anything that got wet.
Tens of thousands of lots on well and septic, built in every decade since the 70s. Pump-outs, well pumps, softeners and aging roofs are the recurring jobs out east.
Royal palms, big trees and 1920s to 60s houses along the river. Tree work, gutters, cast iron plumbing and paint. Beautiful street. Constant upkeep.
