Cape Coral up close
Leonard and Jack Rosen bought a 103 square mile tract at Redfish Point in 1957 for $678,000. The first four homes were finished in May 1958 on Riverside and Flamingo Drives. By 1963 the population was 2,850, and the oldest houses here are now well past sixty years old.
The first Cape Coral Bridge opened on March 14, 1964, crossing the Caloosahatchee to McGregor in Fort Myers. A second parallel span opened in 1989, and each runs about 3,400 feet. The Cape's first homes went up in 1958, so for six years there was no bridge at all.
In 1977 Cape Coral became the first city in the United States to use reverse osmosis on a large scale, starting at 3,000,000 gallons a day. The city sits about 10 feet above sea level on a peninsula ringed by the Caloosahatchee and Matlacha Pass. Water here has always been something people think about.
Cape Coral has the largest population of burrowing owls in Florida. The Florida burrowing owl is listed as a state threatened species, and it nests in burrows in the ground. With that many owls in one city, it pays to look before digging, trenching or clearing a lot.
Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve has a raised nature trail through the mangroves, and Sirenia Vista Park is where people watch West Indian manatees. Across Matlacha Pass sit a national wildlife refuge and an aquatic preserve. A lot of Cape Coral backs onto mangrove and open water.
A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Lee County:
More canal frontage than any city in the world. Seawalls, docks, boat lifts and the humidity that comes off the water are all on the homeowner. Seawall cracks don't fix themselves.
A big share of the Cape still runs on well water and septic while city utilities creep north. Softeners, pumps, drain fields and reverse osmosis units are part of the house.
The original Gulf American houses are block, single-story, low roof, and pushing fifty. Roofs, plumbing, electrical panels and the pool cage are all due or done.
