In Palm Coast, the streets in each section start with the same letter, a rule from a 1974 ITT planning memo. ITT partnered with Levitt and Sons in 1969, the first homes went up in 1972, and more than 38,000 lots were sold by 1975. The letters helped builders, mail carriers and responders find lots.
Matanzas Woods, the L Section, sits on the north side of Palm Coast along Matanzas Woods Parkway, which runs from US 1 to Old Kings. It is the section closest to St. Augustine, with a newer I-95 exit nearby. It still mixes single family homes with vacant lots.
The 1998 fires made national news when all of Flagler County was ordered to evacuate and 45,000 people were displaced. Pine needles and dead limbs piled on roofs and against walls are worth clearing on any wooded lot.
Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, on A1A near Palm Coast, covers 425 acres and has a beach lined with coquina rock outcrops. Louise Powis Clark bought the land in 1936 as a winter home, created the formal gardens and gave the property to the state in 1964.
Palm Coast residents voted two to one to incorporate in 1999, and the city became official on December 31 of that year. It grew from 32,832 people in 2000 to 89,258 in 2020. The city covers about 90.8 square miles, almost all of it land.
