Fernandina Beach up close

From Old Town to Fort Clinch.

Old Town.

Fernandina was platted on May 10, 1811, under the Spanish Laws of the Indies, and was the last town in the Western Hemisphere laid out that way. The original town site, bounded by streets like Ladies and Marine, joined the National Register in 1990.

The 1853 move.

In 1853 the town moved about a mile south of Old Town to be on the railroad. Construction on that line began here in 1855 and reached Cedar Key in March 1861. Today's downtown has more than 400 buildings listed on the National Register.

Shrimp boats.

Modern shrimping got its start here when Sallecito Salvador began working in 1902. In 1913 Captain Billy Corkum brought the otter trawl to shrimping. At its peak, Fernandina served more than 130 shrimp boats from its waterfront.

The pulp mill.

The first sheet of pulp came off the machine at the Rayonier mill in Fernandina Beach on December 10, 1939. By 2014 it employed more than 300 people and was the county's second largest industrial employer, behind the RockTenn plant.

Fort Clinch.

Fort Clinch State Park sits on a peninsula near the northern tip of Amelia Island, along the Amelia River. The state bought 256 acres around the fort in 1935 and opened the park in 1938. It now covers 1,100 acres of dunes, maritime hammock and tidal marsh.

What Fernandina Beach houses need

A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house in Atlanta. Full month-by-month calendar for Northeast Florida is here. Short version for Nassau County:

The whole island is salt air

There's no inland side on Amelia. AC units, hinges, railings and fasteners corrode faster than they do ten miles west in Yulee. Budget for metal to wear out early.

Victorian downtown

The historic district is wood-frame houses over a hundred years old. Paint, caulk, rot and termites are a rolling job, not a one-time fix. That's the price of a porch that pretty.

Marsh side flooding

The west side of the island and the Egans Creek area sit low. King tides and heavy rain find the weak spots in grading and drainage before you do.
