Key West up close
The Key West Historic District went on the National Register on March 11, 1971, with 187 historic buildings. A boundary increase on February 24, 1983 grew it to 2,485 historic buildings. In Old Town, an old wood house is the norm, not the exception.
On April 1, 1886, the Great Fire of Key West destroyed 18 cigar factories and 614 houses. Four decades earlier, an 1846 hurricane had already caused devastating damage. The island has been rebuilding houses after disasters for nearly two centuries.
New Town took shape in the late 1950s, when large salt ponds on the east side of the island were filled in. Houses there sit on land that was salt pond less than 70 years ago. The whole island is only about 4 miles long and 1 mile wide.
In October 2005, Hurricane Wilma's storm surge flooded about 60 percent of the homes in Key West. The highest point on the island, Solares Hill, is only 18 feet above sea level. Water does not have far to climb to get inside a house here.
Hurricane Irma made landfall at Cudjoe Key as a Category 4 storm with an estimated 10 foot surge. Across Monroe County, 27,649 homes had some damage. That included 1,179 destroyed, 2,977 with major damage, and 5,361 with minor damage.
A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Monroe County:
AC units last half as long as they do on the mainland. Metal, paint, hardware and electronics all corrode. Rinse, inspect and replace on a schedule.
Old Town is wood, elevated, and over a century old. Termites, rot, paint and hurricane prep are constant. Irma was a reminder.
