Ocala up close

From Brick City to Silver Springs.

Brick City.

Fire destroyed much of downtown Ocala on Thanksgiving Day 1883. The town rebuilt, and by 1888 Ocala was known statewide as the Brick City. Brick walls hold up well but still need their mortar joints repointed as they age.

The historic district.

Ocala's residential historic district was listed in 1984 and holds 220 historic buildings on 172 acres. Houses there went up between 1880 and 1930, from Queen Anne homes on older streets like King Street to bungalows from the 1910 boom. Wood houses of that age need steady paint and roof care.

Tuscawilla Park.

The Tuscawilla Park Historic District was added to the National Register in 1988. It covers about 20 acres and holds 37 historic buildings. Among them is the United Hebrews of Ocala, a Carpenter Gothic building from 1888.

Sinkholes.

In May 2018 at least a dozen sinkholes opened in an Ocala subdivision, and eight nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Sinkholes form when groundwater breaks down the porous limestone below and the clay and dirt above give way. New cracks in a slab or walls are worth having checked.

Silver Springs.

Silver Springs is a first magnitude spring that puts out over 550 million gallons a day into the 4.5 mile Silver River. It was named a National Natural Landmark in 1971 and became the center of a 5,000 acre state park in 2013.

What Ocala houses need

A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Marion County:

Wells and septic

Outside the city most houses run on their own well and septic. Pump-outs, softeners, well pumps and drain fields are on you, and they fail on a schedule whether you're watching or not.

Horse country acreage

Big lots mean fencing, gates, long driveways and a lot of tree work. Landscaping and handyman jobs out here are bigger than they look from the road.

55-plus communities

On Top of the World, Stone Creek and the rest are full of people who've done enough home maintenance for one lifetime. Send it, see the price, let somebody else climb the ladder.
