Fort Walton Beach up close
In 1861 the town was a Confederate camp and fortified post called Camp Walton, home to the Walton Guards. The post office changed the name to Fort Walton on March 1, 1932, the town incorporated in 1941, and Beach was added to the name on June 15, 1953.
In 1950 the federal government conveyed 875 acres of Santa Rosa Island to Okaloosa County for $4,000, with 3 miles of Gulf frontage. Before that it was Tower Beach, run by Thomas E. Brooks, namesake of the Brooks Bridge. A fire on March 7, 1942 destroyed most of it.
When Hurricane Opal came ashore on October 4, 1995, Hurlburt Field in Okaloosa County recorded a peak gust of 144 mph. Surge ran 10 to 15 feet along the coast from Destin to Navarre Beach. Roofs, soffits and screens are what wind like that finds first.
On January 21, 2025, 7.5 inches of snow fell on Fort Walton Beach during the Gulf Coast blizzard. Cold like that is rare here, but it happens. Exposed pipes, hose bibs and pool equipment are the first things to protect when a hard freeze is coming.
Fort Walton Beach covers about 7.72 square miles at an elevation of about 23 feet, and counted 20,922 people in 2020. Eglin Air Force Base nearby spans 724 square miles. On ground this low near the water, gutters and drainage carry real weight.
A house here runs on a totally different schedule than the same house up north. Our Florida maintenance calendar covers the year. Short version for Okaloosa County:
Eglin and Hurlburt families move every couple of years and a lot of them keep the house as a rental. Managing a property from three time zones away is exactly what this was built for. Send the job, approve the price, get the photo.
Okaloosa Island gets Gulf salt. The Choctawhatchee Bay side gets brackish humidity. Either way, AC units and exterior metal need more attention than a house in Crestview.
Old Fort Walton is concrete block with original plumbing, older electrical panels and roofs that have been patched more than once. Solid houses. Overdue on a few things.
